The rest of the horror was diminished by the poor fighting mechanics. This contributed to the enemies seeming pathetic rather than scary, diminishing most of the horror this horror game had to offer. As a result, you can't escape your enemies in a satisfying way they'll either catch up to you and kill you or you anticlimactically enter a hiding spot where due to the enemy's lack of object permanence, they forget you exist. For fleeing, the only mechanic you have is a run button which hardly makes you run any faster than the enemies. The gameplay gets very stale, very quickly, particularly in the fleeing and fighting portions of the game. On top of that, Bioshock's story has depth to it, critiquing hyper-capitalism and Ayn Rand's objectivist philosophy, whereas Bendy seems like it's going the same way trying to say Walt Disney was a bad person but provides no insightful commentary or critique on the pioneer of American animation. The game feels pretty heavily influenced by Bioshock to the point that it seems more and more like a crutch as you progress through the game. The first chapter is a good hook, but the rest of the game doesn't have much to deliver in terms of story and atmosphere from that point on. The old animation studio setting and cartoon characters was an interesting concept for a horror game, but there doesn't seem to have been much passed that initial concept.
If it wasn’t for the weak gameplay this game could have been perfect for me, but regardless of that if your looking for a different style horror game which also isn’t expensive definitely try this one out. The premise, the interesting characters, the atmosphere.
With all that complaining aside I loved the rest of the game. It all came down to a very underwhelming final boss once you knew what to do. It never really cause me a real problem until the ink river and the hit detection for the ink globs on the boat wheel would be inconsistent.
Also the combat in this game can be laughable, the hotboxes are slightly off which can cause you to take damage even though you most definitely shouldn’t have. Albeit I’ve never really been a fan of horror games general gameplay, this game in particular has you doing a lot of find this, and bring me that, which then would end up in a couple boss fights that were cool in concept but rarely executed how they should’ve been. The only true gripe I have about the game however, is the gameplay. The third chapter however was grueling to get through due to the monotony of doing task after task, none of them being fun except for the final one which was actually fairly challenging. It’s set up in 5 chapters, which I personally liked that style. Bendy and the ink machine is a horror game styled as an early 90’s cartoon.
